Why This Strategy Works
Buying miles can help you reach an award redemption faster when:
- You lack just a few miles to complete an award booking
- Cash fares are high and award seats are available
- You want to book in advance before award space tightens
- You’re targeting partner awards that offer high value
Alaska Mileage Plan has strong partner sweet spots for business and first class redemptions on carriers like Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and more.
Best Use Cases
- Medium-haul or long-haul premium cabin redemptions
- Partner airline award bookings with generous award charts
- High value routes with high cash prices but competitive award pricing
Always compare the total cost of cash vs miles + taxes/fees before purchasing.
Key Terms & Conditions
Mileage Requirements:
The mileage amounts listed represent starting rates for one-way award tickets and apply only to specific regions and distance bands. Itineraries with multiple flight segments may require a higher mileage redemption.
Mixed-Cabin Redemptions:
For itineraries booked with mixed cabin classes, the required mileage will be based on the highest cabin class flown on any segment. For example, if one segment is in Economy Class and another is in Business Class, the entire itinerary will be priced at the Business Class award level, even if the Economy segment is shorter.
Taxes and Fees:
Taxes and carrier-imposed surcharges start from 5.60 USD per passenger per itinerary, with the exact amount depending on the origin and destination. The final total will be displayed when searching for a specific itinerary.
Itineraries that include one or more partner-airline award segments will incur an additional non-refundable fee of USD 12.50 per passenger per itinerary.
Stopovers:
Eligible international flights allow up to one stopover of up to 14 days per one-way itinerary. For round-trip international itineraries, up to two stopovers are permitted—one in each direction.
Booking Timeframe:
Award flights with both the origin and destination located outside the United States must be booked at least 72 hours prior to departure.
